The Power of Storytelling
As a child who moved frequently, James found comfort in books and the opportunity to see the world through different perspectives. That early love of reading grew into a passion for storytelling, which now shapes his classroom by encouraging curiosity, creativity, and empathy. Outside of school, he enjoys bringing stories to life through role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons.
Taking a Leap
Not long after graduating from university, James was still discovering what he wanted his career to be. Like the students he now teaches, he took a leap of faith and moved to South Korea to teach. What began as an adventure soon became a calling, as he discovered a passion for helping children grow and better understand themselves and the world around them. Teaching in different countries also taught him the importance of checking his own assumptions and embracing cultural differences, an approach that shapes his classroom every day.
Personalized Learning Through Identity
James believes personalized learning begins with helping students understand who they are. By encouraging young learners to reflect on their experiences, strengths, and interests, he creates opportunities for children to discover what inspires them and develop confidence in their own identities. When students understand themselves, they are better equipped to take ownership of their learning and ignite the interests that inspire them.
Creating a Culture of Belonging
One of the greatest lessons James learned came from his mother, who taught him to respect the interests and choices of others without judgment. Today, that belief underpins the welcoming classroom environment he creates, where every student is encouraged to be themselves and value the individuality of others.

James' teaching philosophy has been shaped by educational thinkers including Ron Ritchhart, whose work on thinking routines strengthened his approach to developing critical thinking, and Daniel Wickner, whose philosophy of identity-centered learning reinforced his belief that understanding each learner is the foundation of personalized education.
