Emma Hendrix, IB PYP Art | IB MYP Design Teacher - Dwight School Hanoi

Emma believes that art and design are for everyone. In Lower School art and Middle Years Design, her focus is on helping each student find what excites them, whether that’s experimenting with paint, building 3D models, or solving real-world problems through design. She emphasizes the creative process and encourages students to embrace challenges, take risks, and refine their ideas over time. These lessons are a time when students use their hands and minds together to create something personally meaningful and satisfying. No matter their academic strengths, every student has a place to feel successful, confident, and creative in her classroom.

Finding a Future in the Classroom

Emma has always loved school and learning, but she never imagined she would become a teacher. In her final year of university, she took a risk and applied for a teaching position, which led her to a Grade 3 classroom where she began her career. She later transitioned into teaching art, allowing her to blend her love of teaching with a personal passion. No matter how her career continues to unfold, she hopes to keep working in schools because of the energy, fun, creativity, and community that education brings. In this role, she is constantly learning and growing, remaining a student herself.

Beyond the Classroom

One of the reasons Emma loves being an art teacher and a swimming coach is that these activities have had a lasting impact on her own life. As a high school student, the arts, music, and sports were what excited her at school and where she found her sense of community. As a teacher, she now has the opportunity to be part of those experiences for her students and share what she loves with them. Outside of school, she continues to pursue these passions: she makes time for her own art, is an avid runner, swimmer, and biker, and plays on a local football team.
