Bruce graduated with a BBA in Finance before realizing that a traditional business path was not where he felt most fulfilled. In 2014, he moved to Daegu, South Korea to teach in after-school English programs and quickly discovered that the classroom was where he thrived. He later moved to France, earned DELF credentials in French, and completed his Teaching Certifications with a subject mastery in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). He is currently undertaking additional IB workshops and plans to begin a Master of Education in Multilingual Language Learners.
Discovering a Passion for Teaching
Bruce’s first day teaching was hectic, but what stood out most was the immediate connection he formed with students. Watching their eyes light up during those first “aha” moments confirmed that education was the right path returning to school while teaching and substituting to deepen his understanding of international school systems.
Philosophy & Multilingual Perspective
Learning another language himself transformed Bruce’s teaching approach. Experiencing the frustration, exhaustion, and vulnerability of functioning in a second language strengthened both his empathy and passion for ESL. His firsthand understanding of language acquisition drives his commitment to helping students find their voice and build confidence.
Teaching at Dwight School Hanoi
At Dwight School Hanoi, Bruce makes full use of the school’s dynamic learning spaces to create interactive and interdisciplinary experiences. From art studios and performances to “Friday Tea Breaks” that simulate real-world language use, he brings language learning to life while strengthening community connections and igniting the spark of genius.
As an ESL teacher, he views language as a gateway to global perspective. He connects lessons to real-world issues, encouraging students to compare cultures, explore global themes through literature and film, and develop awareness of the world around them. Having lived and worked in five countries outside his own, Bruce brings a broad cultural understanding that allows him to adapt his teaching style to meet diverse student needs.
Within QUEST, he sees the department as a bridge, helping students move from feeling lost to feeling confident and fully integrated within the community. Watching students grow in language, empathy, and leadership is one of the most rewarding aspects of his work.
Balance & Wellbeing
Outside of school, Bruce prioritizes balance and wellbeing. He stays active through sports, particularly CrossFit, enjoys time in nature, and intentionally steps away from screens to engage in reading, creative activities, and experiences that support his mental and emotional wellbeing.
