Wendy Lin, Director of Teaching and Learning | IB DP Chemistry Teacher - Dwight School Hanoi

With nearly two decades of teaching experience across New Zealand, Shanghai, and now Hanoi, Wendy Lin brings deep expertise and heartfelt dedication to her science classroom. Her journey into teaching began unexpectedly. While pursuing a PhD in chemistry, researching biodegradable hydrogels for cancer treatment, a friend watched her teach Sunday school and asked if she had ever considered becoming a teacher. That simple question changed the course of her life.

Teaching Philosophy

Wendy believes classroom management is both an art and a skill that grows with experience. Early in her career, she relied on clear expectations, structure, and consistency. Over time, her focus shifted from managing behaviour to designing meaningful learning experiences tailored to students’ needs.

She plans activities that intentionally build Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, especially social, communication, and self-management, and sees herself as a facilitator who supports students to become independent, collaborative learners. By modelling reflection, resilience, and compassion, she helps students better understand themselves as learners and as young people finding their place in the world.

Her goal is for students to develop a lifelong love of learning, the courage to set goals, and the empathy to understand others. Ultimately, she believes teaching is about helping students look beyond themselves and inspiring them to contribute positively to humanity.

Professional Experience

Wendy’s 19-year career has been shaped not by countries, but by the growth she has achieved through varied teaching environments. Her international experience has broadened her perspective, strengthened her empathy, and deepened her understanding of how to support diverse learners. As an IB workshop leader, she contributes to the global IB community by training teachers, advising schools, and helping leadership teams deepen their understanding of IB philosophy.

Why Students and Families Appreciate Her

Students describe Wendy as a blend of designer, artist, explorer, and counselor, someone who sees both the academic and emotional needs of her learners. She is patient, deeply reflective, and committed to understanding what each student needs to thrive.

Her classes are known for being structured yet warm, rigorous yet caring. Whether designing a chemistry simulation, supporting a student through a challenge, or encouraging curiosity and open-mindedness, Wendy is dedicated to helping young people discover who they are and what they can become.
