Grace Tonelli,  IB MYP/DP Mathematics Teacher - Dwight School Hanoi
Grace Tonelli

Grace has always loved mathematics, particularly the satisfaction that comes from solving complex problems. She believes mathematics is far more accessible and valuable than many people assume. In her role as a teacher, she is committed to making maths approachable for students of all attainment levels, demonstrating its practical applications and relevance to real life.

Education & Professional Background

Grace holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Economics and obtained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through the Teach First program in London. She began her career in Finance and Consultancy, where she also tutored mathematics part-time. Through tutoring, she discovered how rewarding it was to see students grow in confidence and understanding, which inspired her to transition into teaching full time.

Early Teaching Experience

Grace’s first day in the classroom was both exciting and slightly nerve-wracking. She began her teaching career working with economically underprivileged students who required significant academic support in mathematics. Many of her students did not initially see the value of education, but Grace was motivated by the opportunity to help them recognize its power in shaping their future opportunities. Being able to make a meaningful difference in their academic progress and mindset was deeply fulfilling.

Student Success & Habits for the DP

Grace believes that success in the IB Diploma Programme, and achieving balance as a learner, depends on developing strong learning habits. She encourages students to use free periods and after-school study time effectively, seek help when needed, and minimize distractions during focused work time. By fostering these habits, Grace supports students not only in achieving strong academic results but also in maintaining meaningful extracurricular involvement and overall balance.
