MULTI-LANGUAGE LEARNING

Language learning plays a central role in how students grow as confident communicators and global thinkers. Proficiency in multiple languages empowers students to engage with different cultures and strengthens critical and creative thinking. Dwight School Hanoi values linguistic diversity and recognizes the importance of language in each child’s identity.

We prioritize the maintenance of students’ home languages. A strong first language supports identity, comprehension, and the learning of additional languages. When students build solid language foundations, they transfer skills more easily across subjects. This approach strengthens English development and supports progress in any new language a student chooses to study.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING SUPPORT

Dwight supports the whole child through Quest’s English Language Learning (ELL) program. Students who need extra time in English work closely with expert faculty. Each learning plan responds to the student’s strengths, needs, and pace. Trained educators deliver targeted instruction to help students access classroom learning with confidence and clarity.

The ELL program follows four connected strands: Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing, Socio-cultural Competence, and Media Literacy. Teachers blend expectations from these strands to create meaningful experiences. Students explore English in many ways, which helps them build strong communication habits. They also learn how skills in one area support growth in another.

LANGUAGE IN THE IB AT DWIGHT

Language learning is central to the International Baccalaureate (IB) and supports the development of open-minded, reflective learners. In the Primary Years Programme (PYP), students learn language as a subject and through every area of the curriculum. They also study a foreign language from an early age. This transdisciplinary approach helps students think, communicate, and inquire with confidence.

In the Middle Years Programme (MYP), students continue foreign language learning and build deeper insights into language and culture. They study language acquisition every year of the programme. Students progress at their own pace as they strengthen communication skills and expand cultural understanding.

The Diploma Programme (DP) continues this commitment. Students study their strongest language and at least one additional language. Through this work, they explore ideas from multiple cultural viewpoints and strengthen global awareness. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) encourages students to reflect on how language influences understanding and shapes what we claim to know.

IB language learning helps students develop strong communication skills, cultural awareness, and clear thinking. These abilities support academic success and prepare students for a global future.
